CFP: The yearbook of the Finnish Society of Church History 2017 ”War and refugees”

The Finnish Society of Church History invites writers to contribute to the yearbook of 2017. The theme of the issue is war and refugees in the history of Christianity. Articles are expected to relate to the theme.

The media is filled with news of war and refugees fleeing war. How have churches acted in wartime throughout history? Has Christianity been an instrument of peace, a justification for violence, a basis for group loyalty and fighting spirit, or something else? Have churches and church historians been writing the history of the winners, or of the losers? And what of refugees? Over the centuries Christians have, in turn, fled war and persecution, waged war and persecuted others, and received refugees. How have they reacted to these situations? Possible topics range from Eusebius to the Crusades and World War II to the contemporary refugee crisis.

The Yearbook of the FSCH is a traditional journal of church history published since 1919. We welcome scholarly articles; reports and surveys of relevant issues; literature reviews; and culture reviews of fiction, films, games, exhibitions etc.

You may attach images (e.g. photographs or tables) to the articles, surveys and reports. We accept texts in Finnish, Swedish and English; please consult the editors if you wish to write in another language. The maximum character limits are: 65.000 characters for scholarly articles, 10.000 characters for surveys and reports, and 6.000 characters for reviews, including spaces. The yearbook is published annually at the Society’s festival and feast of Saint Henry in January (the issue of 2017 in 2018).

Please send an abstract of your proposed article to the editor-in-chief Piia Latvala (piia.latvala[at]gmail.com) by 30th October, 2016. The abstract should explain what is new about the article, whether it be the source material, method or perspective. Everyone who submitted a proposal will be informed by the end of November. The deadline for the accepted articles is 15th March, 2016, after which they go through a referee process.

If you wish to submit a survey, a report or a review, please contact Olli Lampinen-Enqvist (olli.lampinen[at]helsinki.fi).

Further questions on the yearbook may be directed to Piia Latvala.
